A Guide to Energy Usage at Home
Natural gas- measured in cubit feet. Residential customers typically purchase natural gas in units of 100 cubic feet-or Ccf. (A Ccf is also referred to as a "therm.") Your monthly natural gas usage can be found in the Natural Gas Section of your bill. Typical average residential usage is 80 Ccf.

Electricity - measured in watt hours. residential customers purchase electricity in kilowatt hours - or kWh. A kilowatt hour is equal to 1000 watts hours. Your monthly usage can be found in the Electric Section of your bill. There are 3,412 BTUs per kWh.

Propane (LP) gas - measured in gallons. Residential customers purchase propane gas in gallons. There are 91,000 BTUs per gallon.
Fuel Oil - measured in gallons. Residential customers purchase fuel oil in gallons. There are 140,000 BTUs per gallon.

It appaers that each fuel type has its own unit of measurment; however, there is a common unit of measurement that applies to all these fuel sources. It"s a BTU - or British Thermal Unit. If you were to strike a single match, it would put off the same amount of heat contained in a BTU.

Fuel is converted into heat for your home though your home,s heating system. Many energy experts advocate using a "dual-fuel" system. You can add an electric heat pump to your existing furnace to create a "dual fuel" system. A heat pump work as air conditioners in the summer and heating systems in the winter (by working with your existing furnace) to reduce your home's total energy costs.

Carbon Monoxide (CO)

A colorless, odorless, and poisonous gas produced when carbon fuels are burned with too little air. Carbon monoxide is the result of the incomplete combustion of fuel. A common source of carbon monoxide is automobile engine exhaust. Fuel-burning furnace also produces carbon monoxide. It is present in the combustion chamber, heat exchanger, flue, and stack. Carbon monoxide produces headaches, nausea, and vomiting. However, when the exposure is intense, symptoms may not have time to develop. Instead, the person suddenly becomes unconscious and dies. Carbon monoxide replaces the oxygen in the red corpuscles. Be sure to have your fuel burning appliances checked for proper operation and for cracks in the heat exchanger or flue. Have your appliance checked by a qualified technician each heating season for furnaces, water heaters, and other appliances at least once per year.

EVAPORATOR COIL SLIME, MOLD AND MILDEW
The evaporator coil in your cooling unit produces moisture, where there's moisture there is fungus, such as mold and mildew. The air from your airhandler blows across the coil and into your home which may cause all kinds of allergies. This is why your coil, and drain pan needs to be checked, and treated to stop mold, mildew, and slime from growing in your unit.

AIR CLEANERS
If you think you are cleaning your air by your 1" filter in your heating and cooling system, you are wrong.Your 1" filter is designed primarily to keep debris like pet hair and feathers from damaing the equipment. Thay are not designed to clean the air. That's why if you have allergies you should think about installing a AIR CLEANER. There are a lot of duct cleaning companies out now and one cleaning would probably pay for a aircleaner. By installing an aircleaner you would stop the dust from getting into the duct and need no duct cleaning.

Two ways to save on your gas bill this winter:
(1)Install a heatpump with your gas furnace.                                                                        (2) Replace your old furnace with a new 90+ or more gas furnace.                                                                                                                           Get 10% off all centurion gas furnaces. Get a new 92% centurion gas furnace and use that heat that's going up the chimney to heat your home.
